An area code tells people where a number is from.

An area code is the first three digits of a US phone number, and it says where the number is from.

The next three digits are the exchange, a block of numbers inside that region, and the last four are the line, which is one phone. Each area code covers a set place: a city, a group of counties or a whole state.

That is why the code matters when a number is going on something local. A Denver ad with a 303 number looks like every other Denver ad. One with a code from three states away does not.

A place that runs short of numbers gets a split or an overlay.

In a split, a line is drawn through the area and one side gets a new code. In 2000 the suburbs north of Minneapolis moved from 612 to 763 and the suburbs to the south moved to 952, while Minneapolis kept 612.

In an overlay, a second code is added to the same streets and nobody changes their number. In 1999, 646 was laid over Manhattan, which already had 212. The cost is that every local call then needs the area code dialed. Of the 316 codes here, 210 share their area with at least one other.

Yes. Every number has its own area code, so one account can hold a 212 number for a sublet and a 512 number for band bookings. Your plan sets how many numbers you can hold at once.

Not for the people calling you. Codes that share an area reach the same places and work the same way. The older code has simply been in use longer.
