Burning an ExpressNumber number
What happens when you burn a number.
Each option suits a different kind of short-lived number, so pick by how long you need it.
Start from how often you expect to swap.
To drop a number the moment it starts attracting spam, pick one that burns in one tap.
ExpressNumber stops calls and texts at once and rests the number 30 days, and Burner lists deleting and switching in every subscription.
To swap numbers between jobs and keep calling out, use a free app once.
TextFree allows one change on its free plan, and TextNow allows one every 15 days.
To keep the number for months, read how each one keeps a free number alive.
A free number can be taken back when you stop using it, which the second number guide sets out app by app.
To give out a number and answer on the phone you already carry, use a receive-only number.
ExpressNumber is free for 7 days, then $9.99 a month for 5 numbers, one for each site, store or dealer.
A swap costs more than money, so check what else it costs.
These are the other costs the apps list on their own pages.
A new Google Voice number waits on an ID check.
Google says a user who requests a new number cannot send or receive messages or calls until the ID check is done, and a manual review can take up to 3 business days.
The old number is gone when you swap it.
On ExpressNumber a burned number rests 30 days and then goes back to the carrier pool, so you cannot get it back. TextNow's own guide says that changing your number means surrendering the old one.
Some apps charge for the swap and some charge for the plan.
Burner includes swapping in a subscription, and TextFree Plus charges $9.99 a month for free changes.
This is a number you can burn in one tap.
- Pick a US area code and the number is live in about a minute.
- Give each site, store or dealer its own number, and name it.
- Burn a number and calls and texts stop at once. It rests 30 days, and your messages stay in your inbox.
- Texts only keeps the texts coming and stops the calls, and Block stops both.
These are the questions people ask first.
Yes, with limits. Google Voice, TextNow and TextFree give a free number you can swap, and ExpressNumber is free for the first 7 days. Burner's pricing page lists paid plans only.
TextNow says you can change your number once every 15 days, and TextFree allows one change on its free plan. Google Voice has you delete the number and pick a new one, and its help page lists no limit or fee.
Forwarding stops at once, so calls and texts to that number stop reaching you. The number then rests 30 days before it can go back into circulation, so nobody inherits your spam. Burning is permanent, and your message history stays in your inbox.
No app. Calls ring the phone you already have, like any other call, and you read texts and manage your numbers in the browser, on any device.
Burner's pricing page lists a Standard plan at $7.99 a month, or $3.99 a month billed annually as $47.99, and a Premium plan above it. It mentions free trials when available.
No. ExpressNumber numbers take calls and texts and never make them: you answer calls on your own phone, and you cannot reply to a text from the inbox. To call and text from a burner number, use an app that calls out.
Give each site its own number and name it, like Car dealer or Insurance quote. When the spam starts, you see which name it came to, so you know who sold you.
