408 was created in 1959, when it was split from 415. In 1998 the southern part of the area, including Santa Cruz, Salinas, Monterey and Hollister, was split off as 831. San Jose, Sunnyvale, Los Gatos and Gilroy kept 408.
A second code, 669, was laid over the same area. The California Public Utilities Commission approved the overlay on October 20, 2011, dialing 1 plus all ten digits became mandatory on October 20, 2012, and 669 entered service on November 20, 2012.
